Fluid challenge (FC) is an ‘art’ of giving fluid to diagnose fluid responsiveness. Over the years different methods/techniques have been proposed and studied. Till date, the FC still lacking standardization. Nevertheless, FC is popular among critical care physician when dealing with sepsis patient using various methods. The TROL approach (Type, Rate, Objective and Limit for safety) has been recommended by few authors to guide clinician in fluid challenge. Fluid challenge technique will result in not more but less fluid being given in total, because fluid administration will be quickly discontinued if there is no clinical benefit. The fluid challenge technique should be adapted to the individual patient, with each component defined in advance according to the TROL mnemonic.
