The bariatric patient poses a unique challenge in prehospital care. The airway management may be complicated; poor respiratory mechanics may result in rapid desaturation and hypercarbia and increase the risk of barotrauma due to improper ventilation settings. Furthermore, it may complicate various drug dosing calculations. Meanwhile, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be challenging because of the habitus of the bariatric patient. In addition, they pose significant challenges to patient packaging, lifting and movement.
