Dr Azlean Norzan is an Emergency Physician in Hospital Sungai Buloh, currently in her second year for subspecialty program which is Emergency Trauma Care. She is also a certified trainer of Trauma Life Support Malaysia, Advanced Trauma Life Support and also Advanced Paediatrics Life Support. Beside of training activities, she is also involved in department’s trauma audit and trauma registry as site coordinator. Among other things, she loves travelling and mountaineering.

In Emergency Department, it is quite frequent that we receive trauma patients due to various mechanisms of injury. The symptoms and signs of these injured patients also varied from a single system trauma injury to the complicated multisystem injuries that commonly known as polytrauma. The most dramatic of all are those with exsanguinous external bleeding, and deadly.
This presentation elaborates the type of commonly occurred injury with bleeding, a re-cap about the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic shock and its complication in term explaining the importance of immediate action to stop the bleed. The techniques that are going to be discussed during the presentation include the physical / external bleeding control, the packing of the wound, the torniquet and also the usage of coagulant-impregnant materials on the wound.
This presentation aims to give an overview about how to take control of active bleeding in trauma patients. At the end of the presentation, the audience shall be able to understand the pathophysiology of hemorrhage and also in depth, the theory of the technique used / demonstrated.
