Health and beauty products are among the top products purchased by consumer online. However, the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) of the Malaysian Health Ministry reported that among these health and beauty products such as cosmetic products, diet pills and supplements have been found to contain prohibited substances, including unauthorized scheduled poisons.
When tested, dangerous chemicals like aluminium, mercury, lead, arsenic and cyanide have been found in various unregistered cosmetic products sold online. Other than that, laxatives, diuretics, thyroid hormones, sibutramine and amphetamines are commonly found in the diet pills and supplements.
Most customers are unaware of the harmful side effects until physical symptoms appear after use. The high amount of toxic chemical compound can cause permanent body and even brain damage. Therefore, the public is encouraged to check the notification status of a cosmetic product or supplements at the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA)'s official website www.npra.gov.my before any purchase online.
