Geriatric patients in Emergency Department (ED) are a special and vulnerable population if not recognized and properly taken special care of. It was estimated by 2030, Malaysia will have 15% of our population aged more than 60 years old. Pivoting it from a healthcare point of view, it means that our ED will be surged by this group of distinct patients.
They are associated with a higher risk of functional decline, hospital revisit, and mortality following ED visits. The delivery of acute care for geriatric patients in a hectic and busy environment has its own unique challenge as they cannot be seen as older adults, perpetually we cannot treat children as smaller adults. Key components that need to be addressed in customs with geriatric patients are Triaging, Level of care in ED, and Disposition strategies.
These key elements will determine the strategies on how each of the patients going to be carefully and specially managed.
